President Jair Bolsonaro and President Vladimir Putin meet in Moscow

On an official state visit, President Jair Bolsonaro and President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow today, to discuss global affairs and strengthen Brazil and Russia’s strategic partnership and cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, defense, cybersecurity, science and technology.

Russia is among Brazil’s top 15 largest trading partners. Bilateral trade in 2021 amounted to $7,3 billion, and it is mostly based on the agribusiness chain. Fertilizers are the main Russian export to Brazil. Brazilian exports consist largely of soybeans, meat, coffee and sugar.

Presidents Bolsonaro and Putin have held two previous in-person meetings: on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, in June 2019, and on the 11th BRICS Summit in Brasilia, in November 2019. They also have had two videoconferences and several phone calls since January 2019.

Russia and Brazil are partners in the BRICS, G20, and other such groupings, as well as in the UN's Security Council, in which Russia holds a permanent seat and Brazil was elected for a non-permanent seat (2022-2023). Brazil is also home to large Russian and Ukrainian communities.

In this unique position, Brazil will present its vision for regional peace and will try to advance the agenda of the 11th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Cooperation, held in October 2021, as a means of defining key and central goals for the strategic partnership.

Among other topics, the two presidents will explore ways to expand cooperation in trade, agriculture, information and communications technologies, nanotechnology, ocean and polar sciences, artificial intelligence, research in health, academic mobility and outer space.
